Edinburgh: Canongate Books, facsimile edition 2006. xxxv + 135pp. 7½x5 B/w map. In his foreword Charlie MacLean writes It is a shinning gem of a book – polemic, passionate, provocative, poetic; romantic (nothing wrong with that); beautifully written;, so amusing in places that I laugh out loud, yet so well-informed that I had long suspected its author to have been a distiller or an exciseman. The author's identity is revealed in the interesting introduction be Ian Buxton. Must admit I hadn't realised that Aneas MacDonald was a pseudonym, and I won't spoil the plot by revealing his true identity, you will have to buy the book to find out. The introduction also contains other details about the book and The Porpoise Press. First published in 1930, Buxton considers it to be the first modern book on whisky. This first edition run to only 1600 copies and therefore originals are quite scarce. There was an American edition published in 1930, and it is thought that the print run was longer for this edition. The book was never reprinted and therefore this facsimile is a very welcome, and should be in every whisky lover's library. It is an excellent facsimile at a very good price.
